It Begins: Roofers' Union 'Seeks Repeal/Reform Of Affordable Care Act'
The Wall Street Journal reported that the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers International had become perhaps the first union that supported the Affordable Care Act to call publicly for its repeal or reform.
The union said it had supported President Obama and his administration, but argued that its concerns about the law had not been addressed. In particular, it warned that provisions of the ACA could undermine multi-employer health plans, disadvantage contractors that provide health coverage, reduce work opportunities for union members, and ultimately threaten benefits workers already had.
The episode undercut one of the law's central political assurances: that people satisfied with their existing health coverage would be able to keep it. The roofers' statement suggested that even some former supporters were beginning to doubt that promise. Stay tuned.
